For the first time, 48 nations compete, split into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advance to a new Round of 32. This means 32 of 48 teams reach the knockouts, making the group stage more forgiving but the third-place race fiercely competitive.
The tournament opened June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and concludes with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Across 39 days, 104 matches will be played in 16 cities across three nations.
