The three host nations of the 2026 World Cup, the United States, Mexico, and Canada, have all started strongly on home soil. For the first time, the tournament is co-hosted by three countries, and home advantage has shown early.
Mexico kicked off the entire 2026 World Cup at the iconic Estadio Azteca, beating South Africa 2-0 on June 11. The very first goal of the tournament was scored by Julian Quinones in the ninth minute, the first time a player from a CONCACAF nation has scored the opening goal of a World Cup. Mexico followed up with a 1-0 win over South Korea on June 18 in Group A.
The United States made a statement in Group D, beating Paraguay 4-1 on June 12 in one of the most impressive USMNT World Cup performances in years. They followed it with a 2-0 win over Australia on June 19, putting them in a commanding position. The Americans finish their group against Turkiye on June 25.
Canada, in Group B, opened with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before crushing Qatar 6-0 on June 18, one of the biggest wins in their World Cup history. The Canadians finish their group against Switzerland on June 24, with qualification firmly in their sights.
Hosting a World Cup brings huge benefits: familiar conditions, massive home crowds, and no long-haul travel. With matches spread across 16 cities in three countries, the hosts have used local support to drive strong starts. All three will fancy their chances of reaching the latter stages.
By hosting the opening match, the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City became the only stadium ever to feature in three World Cups (1970, 1986, 2026). It remains one of football’s most storied venues and a fitting place to launch the biggest World Cup in history.

As the group stage concludes, the host nations will be eyeing favourable Round of 32 matchups. Playing knockout football at home, in front of passionate crowds, is a huge advantage. The United States, Mexico, and Canada will all believe they can reach the latter stages, and a deep run by any host would electrify the tournament and the continent.
